Retaining Login

For some reason, my PC has stopped retaining user login. Up until recently,
the login continued until I clicked on logout. Now the login disappears
after a brief period of non use and I have to sign in each time. Help,
please. Thank you.

Hard to understand exactly what you mean, but you may be referring to this:

Control Panel > Display > Screen Saver tab > remove the check mark from
'On resume display Welcome Screen'

Sorry for not being clearer in my original request. What I am experiencing
is a failure of the OS to retain personal settings for the logged in user.
After a period of user non-activity, XP logs the user off and does not
retain the login or the previous users personal settings. One activity is
resumed, the Welcome screen with all the users shown and one has to log in
and wait while the personal settings are started all over again.

There is no check mark in the 'On resume display Welcome Screen'. Never has
been.
