User Account switching takes up to 15 minutes!?

I just set up a new, limited, user account. I do of course have my own
administrative account.

After setting up, logging on, then logging off (to return to the
administrative account), the machine takes about 15 minutes to go from
the full desktop to an unresponsive black screen. I gave up and rebooted.

Can you recommend steps to speed things up? Is there a website which
would direct me to properly speed up account switching?

My machine is using WinXP with all updates and service packs. I am also
running the following startup programs:

AVG Antivirus
Zone Alarm
Windows Defender
MS ActiveSync
Grabit Binary downloader

look into you list of programs to see which one starts scanning, resyncing,
downloading on switching.

normal fast mode switch is well within half a minute. you may also want to
check your memory requirement - swapping and threshing virtual memory can
take long, long time when you have too little RAM. I suspect 512MB may be a
bit less than desirable with all your listed programs.
