Hi. I have a HP pavilion laptop that came only with a .pdf manual. Damn
manual doesn't even contain a specifications page! And waranteed tech
support expired last month, so it would cost me $30 to have this question
answered by HP...

I'm considering getting an external HDD to do periodic Ghost backups with.
Is there a way to find out in Windows about which version of USB is built
into this laptop?

Found on this site. You might want to try it. Not sure if it will help in
your case:

Download and install Aida32 (Google for it). It will tell you tons of
useful stuff about your machine.

Try looking in the hardware manager (right click My Computer, Properties,
Hardware, Device Manager) Click the + at the USB item, look for a USB 2.0
Root Hub or similar. If nothing there says 2.0, you probably have only 1.1.

Also, you might find detailed specs on the HP website.

If you have USB 2.0 hardware and the drivers for it installed, then if
you go to Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager and open
the USB controllers section at the bottom, then there should be one item
described as 'Enhanced' Host controller and if you d-click it, the
Driver files should include usbehci.sys

Note that these drivers only come with XP SP1, or as a separate
provision by the makers of the chips.
