Lost USB Keyboard upon disabling of Third-party service

I'm helping a friend troubleshoot performance issues on her HP Pavilion
ze4500 laptop.

Apparently, she has McAfee Virus Scan loaded (surprise, surprise!).
Using msconfig, I temporarily disabled all Network Associates/McAfee
startup programs and services. Then a weird thing happened: although the
laptop's keyboard still functioned, the external USB keyboard no longer
worked! I narrowed down the culprit to FrameworkService.exe. When I
re-enabled that service, the USB keyboard worked once more!

Does anyone know what's happening? My guess is when she installed
McAfee, it altered something in Windows. But I'm not sure what to do. I
will recommend uninstalling McAfee and using a lighter antivirus app, of
course. But I wonder will she still be without the ability to use her
external keyboard.

TIA.

Nevermind. The problem resolved itself. I'm not quite sure how, though!
This is what I did:

1. Re-enabled FrameworkService.exe.
2. Rebooted into Safe Mode.
3. Re-disabled FrameworkService.exe.
4. Rebooted into Normal Mode

All is well now. Again, not sure what happened, but there it is!

Oh, well. There's more...

I decided to disable Windows Messenger using the method mentioned here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302089

Rebooted and lost the ability to use the keyboard again!

Rebooted into Safe Mode and the keyboard works again. Any theories?
