Mouse and Keyboard do not Respond after install of Service Pack 2

My daughter recently had to reinstall Windows XP which then required her to re download all the Windows Updates including Service Pack 2 .
After a few failed attempts the Service Pack download seemed to be successful with the message on the screen saying it had installed successfully and to restart the computer .
On restart on reaching the login page both the Mouse and Keyboard are frozen and she can go no further .
I suggested starting in Safe mode but the same thing occurs there .

The keyboard is USB the Mouse is a basic Serial Mouse .
I feel that SP2 has probably not installed correctly but can think of no way to access the computer now to uninstall it and try again .

I mention that Service Pack 2 was installed and running OK before the need to Reinstall Windows .

Would be grateful for any ideas .

Make sure that USB devices are being recognized during the boot in BIOS. If
that doesn't work, try using a keyboard with a PS/2 conection, or a
different mouse. Otherwise, what was the problem that warranted an XP
reinstall?

Thanks ,
As I said the keyboard is USB the mouse is PS/2 so both areas are affected .
Also XP service Pack ran successfully on the computer prior to the reinstall of XP.

The reinstall was carried out by a local computer serviceman after it was decided that a Virus infection was causing crashes .Whether this was really the cause we do not know .

Would not know how to detect if devices are being recognised by BIOS .

The USB keyboard should have shipped with a USB-to-PS2 adapter.
You might want to use that temporarily to gain access. It sounds to me
like a XP re-install wasn't really called for. The machine likely still had
a
few remnants of the virus infection. I would go into BIOS setup and
turn off the Legacy mode function of USB. Doing this might allow you
access to resolve the other issues.
Unfortunately, in our business (PC/IT) use of "Fix-All" solutions still
predominates. Analyzing/Diagnosing PC issues is very complex. Using
"Catch-All" solutions (Uninstall/Re-Install) sometimes makes things
worse.

Not sure about the adapter , doubt if it was supplied by Acer the PC Maker .
I would have thought though that the fact that the PS/2 Mouse is not working would make it unlikely that the Keyboard would work under PS/2
I know too my daughter would hesitate to get involved with the BIOS . Unfortunately the repairer who was involved had tried a number of things including replacing Ram which was done under warranty but the crashing of the PC continued to get worse so the Reinstall was tried . Of course software problems are nit under any warranty. As I understand the reinstall to vanilla XP worked OK and things had started to run OK until the Service Pack 2 update.

Thanks for the additional details, gives a clearer picture. From the
original post, it wasn't obvious about whether the technician was a
"Qualified", factory/local contractor. Hopefully, before work began
the repairman backed up your daughter's personal data. Probably
the best solution is a Side-by-Side install of XP, backup data and
then just do a full/fresh install or factory recovery. The "Failed" SP2
installs are likely what caused XP to Fall Over.

Youre best bet with SP2 installation, before you install or before you restart
computer,go to run,type:cmd In cmd type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree to restart,
then type:EXIT As for where youre at now, install xp cd,boot to xp cd(set in
BIOS for this if needed),at xp cd boot menu, select r For recovery, select 1
For
disk C: Press enter for password,type:CHKDSK C: /R When its thru (15-20
min)
type:EXIT Let xp start up,remove cd.
