USB problems

I have an XP Pro SP2 PC that is having issues with its USB ports. Everytime
I plug a USB device into the PC....not matter what device or what port I use,
the PC acts as if nothing is going on. It does not even try to initialize
the device. I went into Device Manager, and all of the USB root hubs etc.
are present and working properly. I uninstalled and re-installed them, and
still the same problems exists. I have checked BIOS to make sure that all
USB devices are enabled, which they are. I have checked the manufacturers
website for any updated drivers, but I already have the latest. Seems like
some sort of quirky XP problem. Any suggestions as to what is going on??
Thanks for any ideas!

I had a machine here with the same symptons you describe, the mainboard
was bad and had to be replaced.
The owner told me it was the second time this had happend to that
machine [Gigabyte board].
If you believe it's an XP problem , install win98 on a different HDD
and check the results.

It's just part of the Windows eXPerience. Unfortunately, it's a p.o.s. when
it comes to correctly handling usb. To prove it, just go and pickup a
livecd like Knoppix and boot your PC with it. It'll see your usb devices
where Windoze will not.

If you're lucky, eventually Windows will straighten out and start working
again with usb. It's crapshoot with that toy operating system.
