SP3 and USB 2

Computer came with USB 1 ports. Got "Device can perform faster" every time I
plugged in a USB 2 type device. So I got a 4-port USB 2 PCI card. Worked
great. Upgraded to SP3 (Win XP Home) and now I get the "Device can perfrom
faster" message every time I plug in a USB 2 type device into the USB 2 card.
Device manager says all drivers are from MS, update driver says I have the
latest. When I click on the baloon to see what ports are available, it shows
nothing connected to the USB 2 card, even though things are connected (like
my laser printer, which still works properly). Are things really running
slower, should I ignore the message ? (it is rather annoying...)

Have you installed the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility
yet? Grab it here if you have an Intel-based system:

You'll want "INF Update Utility - Zip Format (2231KB)". Let me know
how it goes.

ports" is correct, but it shows nothing connected, even though I have several
things plugged in, and they do work. Seem to run a

Please note that the OP had stated "So I got a 4-port USB 2 PCI
card." They do not need to install the chipset drivers nor check the
BIOS, as this is a separate PCI card not part of the motherboard.

Old Grouch: Have you tried to disconnect all USB devices connected to
this USB PCI card and then uninstall it in Device Manager? At the
next reboot, XP should re-detect this PCI USB 2 adapter and re-install
the correct drivers. XP can get mixed up with the USB controllers.

The first post - which you replied to a little earlier - clearly
stated that the OP had installed a 4-port PCI card.

BIOS doesn't apply either way since what isn't working DID work with
the same BIOS just before the updates

The suggestions caused me to look at the 4 port card driver. Microsoft ?
Odd.
So I went to the card mfr's web site and downloaded the latest driver and
installed it. All fixed. (the card came with a CD, but that's buried so
deep it may have turned to coal)

Appears MS SP3 install detected the card and overwrote the driver. The MS
version didn't know it was USB 2. The real driver did.

Now it all works properly (and faster). Thanks to all for the suggestions,
as I wouldn't have thought of this for quite a while. (if ever) SP3 fixed a
few problems, so I'm on the bandwagon for it.

Now, if I can find someone who can do a body transplant...

If you got the message that a device can perform faster when connected to a
USB2 port then your machine already has a USB2 capable port (but not
necessarily a suitable driver).

Behind every physical USB2 port (including on every USB2 peripheral) there
are actually 2 real ports, one USB2 and the other USB1. If you connect a
USB1 peripheral it connects to the USB1 port. If you connect a USB2
peripheral, it connects intitially to the USB1 port, but the driver software
detects that it is really a USB2 peripheral and instructs it to switch the
connection to its USB2 port. The host does likewise and USB2,(high speed)
communication can take place. However, if there is a problem with the high
speed communication such as no communication at all or the data is full of
uncorrectable errors, then both ports automagically revert back to USB1 and
the error message that you get is dealt.

It sounds like SP3 has somehow upset your driver for the USB2 ports, but I
have not heard of this before. What happens if you reinstall your USB
drivers for your PCI card?

It's more likely that the older driver had an issie with something that SP3
updated and the newer driver that you downloaded didn't. AFAIK SP3 doesn't
alter any existing drivers.

No kidding? It's really weird for there to be a proprietary driver
since most of the time it's a generic driver installed by the OS. Glad
you worked it out!
