USB ports don't recognize hardware

Have uninstalled the drivers in Device Mgr, and the computer recognizes the
ports and reinstalls the ports and hubs. When I attach a hardware device, it
recognizes something is attached and installs it as an unknown device; an of
course the device won't work. All started when I broke the USB connection on
a FireLite external hard drive and tried to repair it. Ever since the
connections have been on the fritz. Uninstalled ports and hubs several
times, but the computer always recognizes and reinstalls them automatically.
Help!

USB requires a relatively noise free and impedance matched connection, which
normal cables and connectors provide. However, if you have a bad connector
or cable, you would experience just what you are seeing.
