USB Device Not Recognized - If u can solve this one, you are truly an MVP

Hello & thanx for reading

I have a computer that gives the following error when I plug in some USB
Jump Drives: 'USB Device Not Recognized'. I did say 'some' drives. The
drives that produce this error are as follows: three different Sandisk
Cruzer USB Drives (1GB, 1GB & 512MB) and a 512MB Corsair USB Drive. As
soon as I connect any of the drives to any of the six USB 2.0 ports, I
see the following pop-up: 'Found New Hardware - Unknown Device' then it
reads 'Found New Hardware - USB Device' then 'Unknown Device'. After a
few seconds the following error pops up: 'USB Device Not Recognized -
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and
Windows does not recognize it. For assistance, yada yada" At this point,
if I click the pop-up, it takes me to another window that looks like
this:

USB Root Hub (6-ports)
|
|- Unused Port
|
|- Unused Port
|
|- Unknown Device
|
|- Unused Port
|
|- Unused Port
|
|- Unused Port

All four 'not recognized' USB drives work perfectly in my laptop
computer, so the drives are not at fault. Oddly enough, a Lexar 128MB
USB 2.0 Jump Drive works perfectly in any of the USB ports in the
problem computer. In addition, I connected an Intel PC Camera Pro, a USB
mouse and a Palm USB cradle to the problem computer and all worked fine.
I've tried the four 'not recognized' USB Jump Drives in all six USB
ports, with the same results. I've removed all USB devices from device
manager while in Safe Mode, then restarted - all USB devices installed
automatically, but this didn't help. I've tried the power
management/hibernation fix from MS. I have loaded and reloaded all the
latest hardware/motherboard drivers, flashed the BIOS with the latest
code and I've been to the Windows Update site to look for hidden and/or
any hardware updates I might've missed.
System specs:
Motherboard - Leadtek WinFast K7NCR18D Pro-2 / nForce-2 chipset
1-GB DDR SDRAM
O/S - WinXP Pro SP2

I'm thinking this is a software issue, maybe something to do with
whatever file Windows uses to install Unknown USB devices. I've been
fighting with this damn thing for over a week now and would be eternally
grateful for any help leading to a solution to this problem, short of
reloading Windows, that is.

Thanx,
Homer J.

try this- may help
Go to device manager.
Double click on Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
Right Click on USB Root Hub.
Go to properties.Click on power Management.
Uncheck-Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

-i doubt that's the problem though

An update - I went into the CMOS settings and changed the USB ports on
the motherboard from 1.1 + 2.0 to 1.1 only. I then restarted and
connected the unrecognized USB jump drive and Windows recognized it just
fine. It did warn that the device would work faster in a USB 2.0 port
but otherwise it looked good. I then went back into the CMOS and changed
the USB ports back to USB 1.1+2.0 and recieved the same 'unrecognized
device' message. BTW, I also ran Registry Mechanic and it also did not
help.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanx,
Homer J.

one of the unrecognized USB drives and Windows recognized it just fine -
in fact it recognized all four USB flash drives. It did warn that the

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanx again,

Did you ever install the motherboard chipset drivers (nForce??)

Have you considered that you power supply might not be able to power all the
USB ports? What is the output wattage for your power supply?

Have you considered trying a powered USB hub?

You also clear out the "unknown" device from your USB section in Device
Management.

Did you ever install the motherboard chipset drivers (nForce??)

Yes. Numerous times. I loaded the chipset drivers from the original
Leadtek CD that came with the motherboard and then updated those to the
newest drivers posted on the Leadtek website and also installed the
newest nVidia reference drivers from the nVidia website.
Have you considered that you power supply might not be able to power all the
USB ports? What is the output wattage for your power supply?

Yes. In fact it's a 480 watt Antec True Power PSU. In addition, I can
plug in a USB webcam, a USB laser mouse, a USB Palm Cradle, a USB
joystick and a different USB flash drive (Lexar 128MB) all at the same
time and they all work fine.
Have you considered trying a powered USB hub?

Yes - well, actually I'm considering purchasing an internal PCI USB 2.0
card, but before I waste $9 on something I don't need, I'd like to at
least have an idea that Winblows isn't somehow screwed up. The built-in
USB 2.0 ports work with many other devices, both USB 1.1 and 2.0, and
even if I do add a USB 2.0 card, will Winblows give me the same
'unrecognized device' messages???
You also clear out the "unknown" device from your USB section in Device
Management.

Yes. Tried that. Many times.

Thanx,
Anything else?

Everyone who has a SanDisc please call 1-866-248-4498. I'm glad I did.

SanDisc did not know ANYONE was having the EXACT SAME PROBLEM with their
product. It all stems from the Microsoft Update.

I talked with Elizabeth and she assured me she would pass this on to her
supervisor and R&D. They also are not happy with Microsoft and their program
changes.

Meanwhile, make that call to SanDisc. The more calls they get, the more
serious they will be to develope a solution. Elizabeth told me it may take A
WHILE.

Also you can go to their Web Site and down load the UNINSTALL. You will
have to UNINSTALL from a working machine that recognizes you thumb Drive.
Once the UNINSTALL is complete, you will be able to use it on ANY machine.
This is a QUICK fix to get you back up and running till SanDisc finds/makes a
new driver for it. They said MS won't help them. It is up to their R&D to
fix the problem.

Please make that call to 1-866-248-4498. The more calls the better for all
us.

Okay folks. Here's the cure.

1. Goto Windows Download.
2. Download .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (I selected
x86 for my system).
3. Download or Install from the Web Site.

Viola! Your system will IMMEDIATELY recognize your device.

BTW - it will fix almost any problem with devices (i.e. COM, Serial,
Keyboard).

The file is 25Meg but is worth getting rid of all the aggrevation. Why
Microsoft didn't include this in their WindowsX Upgrade is beyond me. But
then again, that is Microsoft, you know, the guys that love your money, but
won't give you the time of day.

Have a great day. Let me know if this helped you. If it didn't help, just
uninstall it.

Hi Homer

I wonder if you have had any success yet.

I have very similar problem its happened only in the last couple of weeks
but I have a memory stick and external USB drive that no longer works,
although just like you it works if I disable the USB 2.0 settings within the
bios, it works ok on USB 1.1, then reverts to unknown device when I change
back.

My PC is Mesh Elite (uk) Oct 03; XPhome SP2 fully up to date

I spent a couple of hours with Microsoft today after downloading the hotfix
referred to in the KB article 892050 ~ which has not worked. They have since
gone through with me re-setting all my USB inf files to original status and
still nothing, and no problems in device manager just my two unknown devices,
which work fine in other PC’s and my USB slots work fine for my DSL broadband
connection which has its own driver.

Microsoft have not closed the case, but have referred me to my manufacturer
so they can check the USB ports are correctly enabled in the BIOS, but I
don’t have too much hope with that.

I have not yet flashed my bios (bearing in mind I am no expert) but have
noted there is a version about 1 more year up to date; I expect I shall go
back to Microsoft tomorrow but they think they have done everything.

The only thing I think I have done since these devices last worked is
updated windows, and also java. I was wondering if I uninstalled them but
would ask MS first. Unfortunately my restore points do not work.

Anyway be pleased to hear if you have any joy

Jesper
