USB Port Issues

After installing XP Pro I am unable to use my USB ports, I have tried several
devices and none work. My USB ports are SIS 7001 built onto the motherboard.
The device manager says they are working ok.
After a lot of searching I found that there are problems with these ports so
I purchased a ADS USB 2.0 PCI card.

On boot I am getting found new device "NEC PCI to USB ENHANCED HOST
CONTROLLER"

When I try to install I get a fatal error screen.

Any thought on how to fix this

Hi, Rusty.

Is your WinXP fully up-to-date? The original version did not support USB
2.0, as I recall, but SP2 (or even SP1) should have the built-in drivers to
support standard versions of USB ports. Does your ADS add-in card require a
special driver?

In Device Manager, be sure you Show Hidden Devices, then delete every USB
device you can find - then reboot. WinXP should be able to detect all your
USB devices and install proper drivers for all of them, both built-in and
add-on.

Thanks for your reply. Yes I have done all the upgrades including SP2. The
add in card does not need drivers for 1.1 but additional drivers (on disk)
for 2.0 came with it. it is the 2.0 drivers that seem to be causing the
problem. Is it possible that there is a conflict between the OEM USB ports
that came installed and the new card?

You need to be at XP with SP 1 at least to handle USB 2.0 ports. The
card should have come with a CD or floppy of drivers which you should
install before plugging in the card. Once done you can go in SP1 level
Device Manager and Update Drivers; or better get a later upgrade from

Hi, Rusty.

Have you deleted all USB drivers, then rebooted to let WinXP/SP2 redetect
your ports and install the latest drivers? The latest built-in drivers
probably will work, even for the add-in card. But you need to "clear the
deck" first so that the old drivers are out of the way.

If the built-in drivers don't work, THEN you can try the drivers that came
with the card.

Try *not* to install those drivers; remove them, and the card in Device
Manager, and then on Power right off and reboot, tell the New Hardware
to hunt for drivers. If it finds more than one sort, select to use the
Microsoft ones

There may though be a difficulty if you upgraded to SP2 before having
the card, and especially if you did it through Windows Update. That
will have only found USB 1.1 and will only have included the SP2 drivers
for that in the download. You might then find the ones at
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;822603 would work, but it is
rather a catch 22. The other thing to try is installing the NEC ones,
and then going straight off to Device Manager to Update Drivers and tell
it to look on the Internet
