USB Phone Installation

I am trying to install a USB phone but it always "Finds New Hardware" and
installs as "Device unknown". It should only need basic USB drivers according
to the manual which are already installed. I am running Windows XP Home on a
Sony Vaio FS 742/w laptop. The phone installs ok on my desktop. I have tried
two different phones with all the same results, ok on desktop, NG on laptop.

Yes, all Sony and Windows XP drivers are up to date. I suspected there might
be a conflict with other devices on system (USB wireless mouse and portable
hard drive) so I disconnected them but with same result when I try to install.
