My laptop only has USB, the printer only a parallel. I have attached an
adaptor and both the drivers for the adaptor and the printer are installed.
However, a. I cannot print, and b. every time I attached the cable the
printer re-installs. The printer is an HP880c. Please help!

How did you intially install the usb adapter? Did you plug it in with the
printer plugged in also? You may have to install the usb cable by itself so
it gets installed as a parallel cable. BE CAREFUL HERE. I would go to Device
Manager and look for usb hardware that looks like the usb cable and delete
the entries. Then reboot. Then plug in the usb cable without the printer
being attached and see if it installs. Make sure the driver is connected to
the correct port (Printer Properties). Then try plugging in the printer.

I plugged in the usb without attaching the printer, and installed the cable
by itself, which has appeared in device manager as a usb - parallel bridge. I
then attached printer, which immediately wanted me to install it's driver
again!

In the cable instructions it mentions that the printer should be conneted to
the LPT2 : Parallel to USB port. However in my printer options the LPT2 port
has no such description associated with it. I tried the LPT2 port but there
is no response. When I try with the USB002 port there is a vague noise from
the printer, but then it comes up with an error message.

Can you advise me??

I'm not sure what's going on. Here are a couple of suggestions but don't
know if they will help.

Delete the driver from the Printers folder. (Printers and Faxes)
Remove the driver from Printers->File menu->Server Properties ; the Drivers
tab
Disconnect the printer from the cable.
Reboot without printer attached.
Try to Install driver manually from the Printer folder Add Printer. If there
is no LPT port available in the selection box then there is something wrong
with the cable installation and that needs to be resolved before installing
the printer.. If there is an LPT selection and you don't have another lpt
port on your computer, then select that one. If there is a selection for
USB002 (or what ever is defined in Device Manager for the usb cable) try
that.

Another possibility, If the usb came with an installation disk, you might
try to re-install the usb cable from there. You may have to delete the
current installation from the Device manager and reboot to get the
installation window.

Good luck

One other thing, in Device Manager look at the properties of the usb driver
and see if there is a way to select the port to use. If there is an LPT port
you might try to set it there.
