usb mouse on xp stalls

charli b

i have a usb mouse that i use on my laptop and also my home system.

the problem is when i plug it into a usb port, it has times that it will freeze up on me, then a few seconds later it will be fine again for another minute or two.
if i plug in into the ps2 mouse port via an adaptor on my homebase system it will be fine all the time.

i have tried another mouse on the usb ports and i get the same results.

anything i should check on?

Hi charli b,

The USB mouse stalls on *both* computers if plugged into a USB port?
Using another USB mouse in a USB port has the same problem on *both* computers?
Are there any other USB devices plugged into USB ports at the time?

General USB troubleshooting in Windows XP

1. Click Start, and click Control Panel, and then click Performance and Maintenance.
2. Click System, and then click the Hardware tab.
3. Click the Device Manager button.
4. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
5. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and
then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time.
6. Restart the computer, and then reinstall the USB controllers. (Windows should
reinstall them automatically)
