usb/midi/win xp issue: punch me in the face and light my hair on f

Today I valiantly purchased an M-Audio Keystation Pro88. Much to my dismay I
can't seem to get it to work with my computer. This really kills me, I spent
all that hard earned money on something I can't currently use.

Here's the long and short of my problem. Windows (XP Home) detects the
keyboard (Which is attatched via USB) and displays it as "USB Audio Device"
in the device manager. However when I open my audio programs (Reason and
Absynth) and try to configure them to use the keystation as a midi input it
fails to appear in the device list. The only thing that does appear is my
soundcard's midi in port (which btw doesn't work for this keyboard, tried
it). Now I've tried a number of things so far as follows:

1. Repeatedly uninstalled and re-detected the keyboard *FAILED

2. Uninstalled and reinstalled my soundcard *FAILED

3. Grabbed a fix from M-Audio (Something about windows only allowing a
certain number of midi devices installed concurrently NOTE: this keyboard is
the only external midi device in use) *FAILED

4. repeated 1 & 2 after completeing 3 *FAILED

5. repeated 1 through 4 *FAILED

6. Visited M-Audio website, read support and manuals, emailed them *PENDING

7. Tried to download a driver from M-Audio but the page it brings me to for
this model suggests that it is "Class-Compliant" (Nope, I dunno what that
means exactly) and kindly doesn't provide any files at all. *FAILED

8. Re-configured my BIOS a number of ways as follows:
i. re-enabled onboard sound *FAILED
ii. Set my usb 2 ports to run at 12mbps (The manual suggests that the
keyboard is designed for USB 1.1 and SHOULD work fine on USB 2 ports (as they
should be backwards compatible) *FAILED
iii. Enabled Midi/Game port *FAILED
iv. Enabled LEGACY support (I have no idea what that is, but it had
something to do with USB so I turned it on) *FAILED

9. Hours spent searching the net for similar problems but I can't seem to
find the right keywords. *FAILED

Note that I rebooted frequently throughout this gruelling process.

Sorry it's so long, just want you to know what I've done to save time. I
really want to get this running ASAP. I've been looking forward to having a
midi controller for years now.

Anyway, if anyone has even the most remote idea I'd REALLY REALLY like to
hear from you. I've never configured an external midi component before.

The only thing I can think of is that for some reason it's seeing it as usb
device instead of a midi device, but XP should recognize that it's a midi
controller shouldn't it?

Bit more Technical info: in addition to appearing as USB Audio device, it
ALSO shows up under the USB ports as "USB Composite Device". When XP
recognizes it, "Keystation 88 pro" shows up briefly in the system tray and
the device manager but it then resolves to "USB Audio Device"

I'll be sitting here watching this thread, waiting for a miracle.

I downloaded the manual - and you appear to have done everything
(particularly downloading the "fix").

I'll sit next to you (and André) with a pot of coffee and mugs. :)

Wow, tech support at M-Audio actually had the cure! They instructed me to
download this "Generic Driver" file from their site and install it. Here's
what they sent me:
***
You should install the Trigger Finger driver, it's a generic driver for our
keyboard series.
You can download it here:

http://m-audio.com/index.php?do=sup...03ff2e2658624dce1eca619153&o=Windows+XP&f=522

Then install the driver by following this detailed procedure (just replace T
Finger by KS Pro 88):

I still had difficulty after installing said driver, but to fix it all I had
to do was select the "USB Composite Device" under the USB root in the device
manager and update the driver manually. To get it to work I had to select a
manual driver install (ie. do not automatically install) and point the
updater at the m-audio/install folder. At this point I selected my keyboard
driver (it barked at me saying it wasn't digitally signed) but it did install
and now it works just FINE!!!! I hope this helps someone else out there,
nothing more frustrating than having a midi controller for a paperweight.

Thanks for all your suggestions folks, I genuinely appreciate it.
