usb midi keyboard found as hardware, not as a device

My daughter has bought an M-audio keystation 49e; it's a midi keyboard you
can plug into an usb port of a PC.

The problem is that on 2 of our 3 PC's , windows immediatly recognizes the
keyboard, but when I look in one of the midi applications (I've tried a
couple) under 'devices' the midi keyboard is not shown.

On the third PC however the keystation can be found and keyboard and
application work well. Unfortunately this one is not my daughters PC and we
can't switch them.

All 3 PC's have windowsxp sp2 (dutch version); the sound cards differ.
Playing midi files works well on all the PC's; connecting usb devices works
well as well.

I hope someone can help me on this, I've run out of ideas.

The situation reminds me of the recent thread "midi drivers wont install??".
I guess that the driver consists of a loader part and an actual driver part,
and that on your daughter's computer (and one other) only the loader part
(USB-part?) has been installed.

Have you found a solution yet? I'm having the same problem but with an
M-Audio Keystation Pro88.

Mr. Laarman said that maybe we haven't installed the MIDI component to our
devices, but my device is supposed to be class compliant and as such did not
come with any drivers nor are there any provided on m-audio's website, so I'm
thinking it's purely a windows issue, I just have no idea how to fix it.
I'll post my problem elsewhere as "usb/midi/windows xp issue: punch me in the
face and light my hair on fire." incase you want to follow along.

Wow, tech support at M-Audio actually had the cure! They instructed me to
download this "Generic Driver" file from their site and install it. Here's
what they sent me:
***
You should install the Trigger Finger driver, it's a generic driver for our
keyboard series.
You can download it here:

http://m-audio.com/index.php?do=sup...03ff2e2658624dce1eca619153&o=Windows+XP&f=522

Then install the driver by following this detailed procedure (just replace T
Finger by KS Pro 88):

I still had difficulty after installing said driver, but to fix it all I had
to do was select the "USB Composite Device" under the USB root in the device
manager and update the driver manually. To get it to work I had to select a
manual driver install (ie. do not automatically install) and point the
updater at the m-audio/install folder. At this point I selected my keyboard
driver (it barked at me saying it wasn't digitally signed) but it did install
and now it works just FINE!!!! I hope this helps someone else out there,
nothing more frustrating than having a midi controller for a paperweight.

Thanks for all your suggestions folks, I genuinely appreciate it.

NH,

many, many thanks for posting this. Finally today we were able to try this
and YES, now it works. Great.
