USB Mass Storage Device not working properly in XP Home

When I plugged it in for the first time the systray
popped up the new hardware message and that it recognized
it and was installing drivers. No more messages from it.
If I go into My Computer to check on it, it will either
display a blank My Computer window or it will not do
anything at all, as if Explorer is hanging. If I go into
the "safely remove hardware" icon in the system tray I
sometimes see that the drive is an unknown device, yet at
other times it has it identified as a Generic USB Mass
Storage Device. Trying to "Stop" it to make it safe to
eject makes the safely remove hardware window freeze. If
I remove it, all those frozen windows update immediately
and everything continues normally, but sometimes I'll get
the drive display in the My Computer window even if it's
removed.

Every once in a while it does let me use it and it's
worked fine, but that is only once out of every 10 or so
tries. And even then, it only works for a minute or two.
After that time, any other attempts to access it meet
with the window freezing problems. I was also suspecting
that it could be that the drive was not getting enough
power, but I moved it to a hub with its own external
power supply and I still have issues with it.

I also unplugged my USB hub and all the devices on it,
uninstalling all the drivers from within the device
manager and tried installing them all again one by one.
No such luck with that method either. Of course, I did
that only on the hub. I did not remove the mouse from the
other USB root in my motherboard.

I've also tried disk management under the System
Management option inside the control panel but it is
either not recognized in there either or if I choose to
do any action on it from there (if it ever gets
recognized) it will freeze until I unplug it. I'm really
out of ideas on how to handle this problem.
