MY HARDWARE:
Toshiba Satellite laptop P4 3.06G, 512MB, 60GB, USB 2.0,
Windows XP Home.

I've installed a new 120GD IDE hard drive into a USB 2.0
external enclosure case made by Bytecc:

http://www.byteccusa.com/product/enclosure/ME-320.htm

Windows will recognize I have installed the device but
only as a "unknown USB device". From what I understand
Windows is suposed to automatically detect it as a "USB
Mass Storage Device" and it is not.

I have searched for Windows XP device drivers for a USB
Mass Storage Device without success. I am A+ certified
and I understand PCs very well. What suggestions can you
provide for me? Thank you!

I got one of those enclosures too, only an 80 Gb Hard Drive. I have XP
Pro and it installed it but said it had problems, but it worked ok.

My problem is after I screwed the hard drive into the case (before it
just banged around in there when I moved it), it stopped working. Now
the light just blinks and the fan and the drive won't spin when I turn
it on. When I unplug the power cable from the hard drive from the
enclosure it will light up and the fan will work. Any suggestions?

I checked with a friend and he pointed out that in the ME-320 a couple
of the screw holes were covered with metal and shorted out the drive
(part of the circuit board smelled like something was burning). It's a
Western Digital White Label 80 Gb Hard Drive - would replacing the
circuit board work or is it dead? I copied 15 Gb of data that has no
backup that I would really like to keep.
