USB Issues

I'm using Windows XP. I have had an HP6940 Deskjet for a year with no
problems. Last week, a message popped up that there was a printing error,
and my document did not print. Cleared the print queue, tried to print
again, no luck. Restarted the computer. Still no printing. Uninstalled and
reinstalled the printer. No good. Contacted HP online numerous times. When
the printer is plugged in, the Device Manager says "Unknown Device". HP
keeps telling me to uninstall the USB Root Hub that says unknown device, and
restart the computer and my problem will be solved. This is not working. HP
sent me a new printer, same problems.

When I use the installation disk, everything is fine until it says to plug
the printer in via USB. The computer does not seem to recognize the
connection. I have tried waiting several minutes at this point to see if it
kicks in. The next screen says I can proceed and connect the printer later.
When I do that, it says it is installed, but the printer is not listed in my
printers. The Device Manager will say unknown device. If I try to plug the
printer in without installing, there is no popup to let me know that I
plugged something in.

I have installed my boss' HP6540 printer with no problems. Works great.
When I plug it in via USB without installing, the balloon pops up to let me
know that it is plugged in. I have tried using his USB cable with my
printer, and with the new printer HP sent. No luck, of course. I have also
plugged his USB mouse in and my computer recognizes it right away and it is
immediately functional.

I have a Sony Micro Vault thumb drive that I have used in the past with this
computer. Now the computer does not recognize it. Have a brand new Cruzer
Micro thumb drive that has never been used, and it won't recognize that
either.

I have 2 USB ports. I have tried both of them with the printers, with the
same results. I don't know a whole lot about USB. In the Device Manager, it
lists 3 instances of "SIS 7001 PCI to USB Controller", then "SIS PCI to USB
Enhanced Host Controller", then 4 instances of "USB Root Hub". If I
uninstall all 4 USB Root Hubs (was scared to uninstall the rest), then
restart the computer, it will recognize my thumb drive if I try to plug it
in. The balloon pops up to say it found new hardware, then another pops up
to say unknown device. I then cannot access it and the Device Manager says
unknown device.

Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated!

You have taken all the good steps in the troubleshooting process I could
think of, and the outcome puzzles me a lot, not at least as the new HP6940
didn't work, the other USB cable made no difference and the HP6540 was
recognized. The only step I at the moment could think of, was in the Device
Manager, on the Action menu, click Scan for New Hardware. Just to notice
whether the HP6940 is seen or not.

Then you might find some ideas in the two referenced Microsoft articles,
that could supplement what you have done so far:

"General USB troubleshooting in Windows XP":
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310575/en-us

"How to troubleshoot unknown devices that are listed in Device Manager in
Windows XP":
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/314464

For my curiosity: It just so didn't happen that you installed any Microsoft
Updates last week in time frame when the problem appeared?

You could try here(in the forums) if all else fails - they have helped me in
the past with a sony digicam that would not be recognised.

geek...
i've a similar problem. got a lexmark 2500 all-in-one. i can't progress
thru the install process point where i'm prompted to select the method of
connecting the printer to the computer because the usb option is greyed-out.

lexmark tech support had me look at the USB Serial Bus controllers under
Device Manager to see if something called the USB Printing Support was there.
It is'nt on this machine and they said that is the problem - call my
computer manuf. my comp is about 3 yrs old so i'm not doing that.

i'll keep investigating and let you know if i find anything.

According to this, usbprint.sys comes from Microsoft. On my computer, which
has no printer installed, there is no usbprint.sys that I could find. I do
have a C:\winnt\inf\usbprint.inf (my system is Win2K SP4) and I expect
if I were to plug in a printer, that usbprint.inf would get consulted about
what to add to the system.

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/archive/usbprint.mspx

So the question would be, where is usbprint.sys stored, before being
called for by printing support ? There must be a pile of drivers in a
CAB somewhere. On computers with Windows installed from the factory,
all that stuff had better be on the hard drive, before the computer
leaves the factory.

This tool can look at the raw device data, and for a USB device
connected directly to the computer USB ports, may give a hint as
to what a device is declaring (printer or otherwise).

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/stream/vidcap/UVCViewdwn.mspx

There is a procedure listed here, for causing the system to re-enumerate
USB ports, but I've never used it. Doing this will sometimes straighten
out detection issues.

Paul,

Just FYI, on my OEM configured HP Pavillion, XP Home SP2, two printers
installed, Microsoft usbprint system files are "installed" as follows:

C:\I386\DRIVER.CAB
C:\I386\SP1.CAB
C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\driver.cab
C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\sp1.cab
C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\sp2.cab
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\sp2.cab
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\
