USB-to-35 pin printer port

Hi:

Compaq Presario (2002) running WinXPSP3. Two USB ports no longer work. There
is power to them but multiple attempts to isolate the issue have failed
(uninstalling in Device Manager the Root Hub; new USB.inf file; running a
script that I found on a MS Website for WinXP no longer recognizing a flash
memory stick; unchecking power management for the USB ports, and so forth).
There is no audible ping and no "Found New Hardware" ever appears when I plug
a USB mouse or USB 2.0 printer cable in.

Now, the question: is there any such connection "allowed" between a 2008 HP
printer with a male USB end and a female parallel printer port (35 pin?) on
the Compaq Presario? If so, I can bypass my faulty USB ports. If not, I have
an open bay for a new card with 5 USB ports.

Thank you.

Buy the USB card, it's more versatile and about the same cost as a USB to
parallel cable.

Hi:

Did just that: spent $19.00 US on a 5-port PMI card and it was plug-and-play
and "all is good". Thank you for your time. I spent hours scouring the 'Net
for USB port issues and WinXP SP3, and tons of advice and "fixes" are
offered. I guess in retrospect that power to the ports does not equal a
functioning port.
