usb hubs replicating

I have a soyo dragon with via kt400. usb 2.0 with
winxp/sp1a. I have a lexmark x73 mfp and a usb modem
(found it stuffed under desk and decided to try it again).
The x73 works fine, until the modem (aztech 9100) is
plugged in. I can force one or the other to work but not
at same time. I have narrowed it down to the modem or the
printer replicating the other. The scanner works fine
regardless. The scanner is apparently the hub and the
printer is a device attaced to it. Now, why is this and
how do I go about fixing it. When I use the modem and the
printer is enabled the modem says port is in use. When
modem is in use printer hangs and then says error
communicating.

Nothing is screwed up. I want to know why it does this and
a work around. Someone who knows hardware and xp will know
the answer. someone who doesn't will reply with "why would
you want to screw it up". And if you don't play you don't
learn.

Why do you want to run two modems at once.

Im sorry, I read your post wrong, but I ran into the same thing on a
customers pc using cable modem on USB, as soon as the Lexmark all in one
printer is plug, then can't get on net, only one at a time. Found a fix at
the Lexmark site that worked, but just connected the cable modem to the NIC.
Later on, did not mean to be RED.

I am not running 2 modems and have no intentions of such.
I am thinking of building a Via Epia setup for my camper
and the usb modem would be nice to have. Some times the
cell phone reception isn't so good so I would like to use
it as backup. I just don't want to get into an argument
with printer/scanner. Theres a very simple fix for it,
it's just a matter of finding it. I'm not the type to just
toss it and accept it as junk, I have to know why then
I'll toss it for junk. Ive searched Lexmark's site some,
will have to dig deeper and change search criteria.

I would connect both device, and then remove the USB from the device manager
and reboot.

Good suggestion. Been toying with the notion in the back
of my tiny mind. I've got MS WPA # on speed dial, I'll do
a fresh install on an old pair 4gb one with sp1 and one
without and see what happens. might be a sequence to
follow.
Thanks

XP does not have specific modem drivers AFICS. Did you use a setup
program for it that allows you to select a non-conflicting com port?
Or, can you change the com port manually to eliminate the conflict?

He is using USB ports, not com ports.

It doesn't seem to matter how I do the install, with sp1 or without. The
order of install doesn't matter, aztech's website says that this modem will
not cohabitate with another identical modem so somehow maybe however the hub
is setup in the scanner it appearstomodem as another identical modem?
Neither lexmark nor aztech have any ideas and no firm ware revisions in the
foreseable future. On the plus side however I have successfully created my
own xp-pe cdrom with support for this modem an lcd monitor and a via epia.
Now I can have this little jewel of a system as a true portable because I
won't need a harddrive as zp runs off cd and flash memory is harddrive and
the battery last so much longer. Thanks for the help Nick. I appreciate it
but am going to use it for this littleportable system I built.
