I tried to connect a USB HUB, Got a message saying that windows cannot
recognize the hub. Since then all the pieces that was connected to the hub
cannot be recognized by windows. I have deleted all the USB controllers,
restarted the PC and reconnected the pieces, but the ones that windows cannot
see, is still invisible while the mouse, modem, DVD writer etc. still
reloaded automatically but the ones that was connected to the hub, external
hard drive, flash disk and scanner will not load.
What can be wrong, and how do I fix it.

Uninstall all "unknown" devices in the USB and Unknown sections.

Try the hub on a different USB port

Hub is faulty. XP should not have problems with usb devices, even hub
(generic driver)
