USB hub closes other devices when I plug in printer

Things have been working fine for some time but suddenly the DLink hub and
the Canon printer have started disconnecting the other devices on the hub
when I start the printer.

I'd like to know what made this change. I have downloaded a game or two,
but nothing else that should have changed USB configuration.

Running XP with SP3, all drivers up to date.
 
I sounds like the printer is drawing more power from the USB line than the hub can handle.
Can you remove the printer from the hub and plug it directly into the computer?
Is the hub have a separate power supply? (you did not identify the DLink hub model)
