USB harddisk

I'm running XP Professional on a laptop with a partitioned 40GB harddisk. I
bought an external harddisk casing which connects via USB and has its own
power supply and placed a 120GB Maxtor harddisk inside it. After I hotplugged
it to my laptop, the appropriate drivers were installed automatically and
device manager reports no problems with the device (USB Mass Storage Device
and Maxtor 6 Y120L0 USB Device). However, the device fails to show up in "My
Computer". Why is this so?

I have gone through previous problems but all the suggestions did not work.
Can anyone help?

Sounds funny but I stumbled across a similar problem posted about two usb
thumbdrives and decided to try my luck with the method suggested and it
worked.

Right click on My Computer and select Manage. Select disk management option
and initialize the new HD. I'm not sure if the other options will work but I
permenantly assigned a letter to the USB HD even though its removable storage.

The problem I'm having now is similar. however I can't even see it in disk
management. It took longer than usual to open the Disk management. It must
have tried to do something or search for something, but fail eventually.
Can anyone give some pointers??
Thanks.

it's a pain in the neck but I have had similar problems. What I find is
that it depends sometimes on if it installs correctly the first time. If it
did but then failed to show in my computer then try restarting the pc.
Also, hit F5 a few times to force explorer to refresh. This might make it
come up. If that fails call up the people you bought the enclosure from.
It might be tough if it's not a well known maker, or if you got it off eBay.

hope this helps..........
