external USB drive not working properly

I have USB to IDE adapter, when connected with 40GB Maxtor Harddisk the new
device is recognised and driver is installed. Control panel shows both USB
driver and Harddisk as installed and working properly but I Cannot find the
drive in Explorer or My Computer or Administrative Tools Disk
Management......

The same gear works fine on a different PC using same version of Windows XP
Pro SP1, any help in resolving this issue would be appreciated.

TIA

I have the same problem with my removable pen drive. I found a work-around that works for me, but no solution.
TRY THIS WORK AROUND
LOG OUT OF THE COMPUTER WITH THE DRIVE ATTACHED (DO NOT REBOOT OR RESTART) - THEN LOG BACK IN AND SEE IF WINDOWS EXPLORER OR MY COMPUTER RECOGNIZES THE DRIVE

If so, let me know. I'll keep you posed for a better fix. Please do the same for me.

I have similar problem. I have my hard drive is c:, a cdrom is drive d: and a cdrw is drive e:. My network starts at drive f: I plug in the usb drive and XP tells me it loaded. It's in the control panel, but there is no drive letter assigned to it. Rebooting or restarting doesn't help

I have available drive letters past drive f: and on my Windows 98 computer, it mounts to drive K: just fine; but not with XP
