USB Storage Device Does Not Appear In My Computer

I want to image the hard drive in a friends computer before I work on it so I
connected an IDE to USB adapter to the hard drive, made sure it had power and
then plugged the USB cable into one of my computers.

Windows XP Pro detected the new disk and says it installed it OK but I can't
see the hard drive in My Computer or from Disk Management. I can safely
remove the device and in Device Manager a USB Mass Storage device is shown as
installed.

I have successfully installed and used at least two USB powered external
hard drives with my computer before. One of these USB powered external hard
drives was connected to my computer when I installed my friends hard drive.

Has anyone met this problem before?

I resolved this is as follows:

My computer has a hard drive C: and an optical drive D:. I changed the drive
letter of the optical drive to E: and then re-connetced my friends hard
drive. My friends hard drive appeared in My Computer as D: and I'm imaging
it now.

Many thanks for your reply.
