My USB 20GB hard disk, which works fine with any standard
Win 2000, does not work with Win XP.

With Win 2000 it required no additional driver files to be
loaded. I could just plug it in and it worked fine.

In Win XP, it is simply not recognized and makes a funny
noise ( as if continuously seeking the hard disk platter)

This is an IBM hard disk with a unbranded casing which
connects externally to the USB and is automatically
recognised as E drive in Win 2000.

On same machine?

Yeah, the same machine. I have used this USB HDD on
various Win 2000 machines (successfully). I have tried
this on this XP m/c and on another LAPtop which came
preloaded with XP (both attempts unsuccessful)
