My USB flashdrive is recognised in the device manager and in the system tray.
However when i go into My Computer it does not show it and i can't access it.
I have tried using different ports but the same thing happens.

Thanks in advance,
Luke

Did you assign a drive letter to it using Disk Management
(diskmgmt.msc)? Is there a property for the device in Device Manager
(devmgmt.msc) to assign a drive letter?

How do you assigna drive letter?

Already mentioned in my prior post.

Are you logging into a domain, and do you have mapped drives to Netware
shares? Windows assigns the first non-OS assigned drive letter to the
USB drives. However, if the first non-OS-assigned drive letter is the
letter of a NetWare share, the USB device is unreachable. You have to
use Disk Management (already described) to manually assigned a fixed
drive letter that is not also used by a Netware share.

HI I got the same problem for the last 9 months and although spending quite
a few hours i did not manage to solve it yet.
To answer to Luke's question on assigning letters:
1- Click Start
2- Click Control Panel
3- DoubleClick Administrative Tools
4- DoubleClick Computer Management
5- DoubleClick Disk Managment
Your flashdrive probably shows there but without any drive letter assigned.
6- Click on your Flashdrive letter
7- Rightclick and choose Change drive letters and paths
8- Click Add
9- click Assign the following drive letter and path
10- Choose something relatively at the end of the laphabet (e.g. T)
and here you go.

I hope that after rebooting you will still see your flash drive assigned.

The above process though only works untill I reboot fo me.

Vanguard do you have any other ideas ? I would appreciate it.

Did you check the flash drive maker's web site for the latest driver and
the latest firmware update?

Thanks for the quick reply.

I did check with the manufacturer and nothing was solved. The problem i face
is with ANY and ALL USB mass storage devices I connect.
It probably has to do with XP and not with the specific drives.

any orther ideas ?

Flash drives should NOT be used for permanent storage, nor should they
be used for highly-changing storage. They wear out. They go bad. See
my post at http://snipurl.com/rom6. The more you use them, the slower
they get and the more worn they get until eventually they fail. Digital
camera owners know that periodically they have to toss a flashcard that
goes bad.

And new products are bad or can go bad prematurely. Sounds like your
thumbdrive isn't reliable, especially since your friend's thumbdrive,
which is a different brand, works okay. Just because the logic
interface works doesn't mean the flash memory works flawlessly. You
might want to contact the thumbdrive maker to ask about returning it as
defective to get exchanged under warranty.

I am also having a problem with USB devices not showing in My Computer. They
do show in Device Manager and Disk Management. I tried assigning a drive
letter, no good. I noticed this yesterday when I tried connecting my iPod, it
wasn't showing in iTunes show i checked My Computer, not showing there
either. I figured i had a problem with the iPod so i tried it on my iBook
worked fine there. Next I took it to my parents house and tried on their XP
machine worked fine there. Brought it back home no change I tried my Sony
Digi Cam it too was not recognized in my computer. These devices worked last
week. I have one major change on my system, i repaired Windows XP Pro after
a MS update caused it to freeze on restart and i could not get it to boot
beyond the splash screen. I ran the XP C and used the repair option on it.
Was able to recover my install.

Any advice on this would be appreciated.

I know that it has been over two months since the last reply, but I wanted to
put in my two cents on the help this gave me. These steps were very helpful.
The only thing is that when you get to the step about adding a drive letter,
the computer won't recognize it. But if you change the drive letter, then
the computer quickly aligns the Flashdrive to the letter. Thanks for the
steps and I hope that this helps.
