USB error message

Hi,
I have just installed a new hard drive and installed WinXP Pro Sp2 into a
customers computer. AMD 2500 CPU, NVIDIA TNT2 graphics card, 256MB DDR Ram,
GigaByte GA-7VA mobo.
I installed the latest Via chip drivers and plugged in a flash drive device
and got this blue screen.

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent
damage to your computer.

BUGCODES_USB_DRIVER

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your
computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware of software is properly installed. If
this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for
any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or
software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you
need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your
computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe
Mode.

<---THERE IS USUALLY SOME VARIATION OF THESE NUMBERS

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further
assistance."

I have updated the BIOS and done everything I could possibly find on the net
including MS site to no avail in hope of finding a fix. There are no USB
devices attached to this computer as yet.
Its only when I plug the flash drive in that the blue screen error occurs. I
have tried it with another flash drive and in different ports and even
installed a USB 2 PCI card but it made no difference. The flash drive needs
no drivers so I can't update any.
I can't roll back as there is nothing to roll back to, it is a brand new
system, any ideas please?

Marvin:
I'm reasonably sure you've already done this, but just to make absolutely
sure...

You have re:checked your BIOS items to ensure that *both* the USB 1.0 (1.1)
and USB 2.0 controllers are enabled, yes?

If I understand you correctly, the problem arises when you connect either of
two USB flash drives and you know both of those drives are non-defective &
functioning properly in other machines, right?

Have you tried connecting a USB printer, scanner, USB external HD to the
machine? Same problem?

And using any or all USB ports, the same problem occurs, right?

So what happens when you boot without the USB device being connected? A
normal boot? The problem arises only when you connect the USB device?

You say you just installed a new HD and XP w/SP2. So was the machine
functioning properly before this re the USB situation? Had a different OS?

Have you tried uninstalling all the USB drivers in Device Manager and let
the system re:detect them?

Hi Anna thanks for your reply - yes I have done everything you suggested
already, you are correct in that the 2 flash drives work perfectly in other
machines.
The computer boots and runs fine until you plug the flash drive in.
The same thing happens in every USB port.
The machine was functioning perfectly before but had Win98 installed.
I have uninstalled the USB devices and reloaded them to no avail.
The USB 1.1 and 2 are enabled in BIOS.
I have not tried any other USB devices (printer etc) as yet, I think if it
happens with the flash drives then it will do the same with any USB device.

You say that "I have uninstalled the USB devices and reloaded them to no
avail.". You're referring to the USB *drivers* listed in Device Manager,
right? You're not just referring to the USB devices themselves, right?

And any USB devices that were connected during the previous Win98
installation worked without problems, yes?

Try connecting a USB printer, or USB scanner, or USB external drive, or some
such (all 2.0 devices, of course) just to ensure this isn't a motherboard
problem.

I have done all you have suggested including plugging another USB device in
with the same result

All the USB devices worked before under Win98

I uninstalled the USB devices listed under device manager.

Still keep getting the same error - this is a strange one I have never seen
this before (I run my own computer repair business)

Marvin:
All I can give you at this time is my sympathy because I think I understand
the frustration of what you're going through. We too, have experienced it in
this area far too many times.

I just responded with the following to a query in the MS windowsxp.general
NG from another user having another unexplained USB drive recognition
problem...

"I've become more & more convinced that the endemic USB non-recognition
problems we've all been experiencing is an indication that there is
something seriously flawed with respect to either the USB 2.0
specifications, quality control issues affecting the manufacturer of these
USB devices including motherboards and other USB components, the XP OS as it
relates to USB 2.0 devices, or possibly a combination of "all the above". We
have encountered far too many unexplained problems affecting
detection/recognition of these devices and their erratic functioning not to
believe that something is seriously amiss in this area.

I realize all this is of little comfort to you in overcoming your present
problem. I wish I could be of more help to you. Perhaps others will have
some better insights."

Thank you very much for your help (and sympathy!) with this problem, Anna it
is much appreciated.
I have posted the same problem on other sites and if I find a fix I will
post it here!
Thanks again
Kind regards
