USB error message

When I plug in USB devices like the card reader for my camera, a message
pops up near the system tray saying "this device can run faster if you plug
it into a high speed USB 2.0 port..". I'm using a 4 year old Sony laptop.
Does the message refer to a hardware upgrade, or a different driver? I'm
running XP Pro with SP2 and all updates.

There are 3 USB standards 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0. All USB devices have a
unique identifier called a VID. The message simply means that XP has
enumerated (detected) the device and been told it's USB 2 compliant.
XP will normally map a USB 2.0 device to an enhanced controller. In
your PC none is available and it gets mapped to a USB1(.1) controller.
It's simply a message to indicate the device will work, but not at it's
maximum capability.

Thank you. Sounds hopeless. Guess I have to wait an extra 8 seconds for my
pictures to transfer. More coffee!

Actually not hopeless. There are PC Card adapters for notebooks that
allow you to get USB 2.0 capability for as low as ~$30.00.

Thinking Desktops what are the governing factors to determine whether
you can install a PC Card adapter on a computer circa 2000?

TIA

Gerry,

Sorry I'm not following you on this one, Desktops ?

There are 3 distinct types of PC Cards, I, II & III - You
can read a primer from the PCMCIA organization.

I probably should have asked the OP about the notebook
and what Cardbus controller is in it before suggesting the
USB 2.0 PC Card as a possible solution.

That message refers to your (slow) USB 1.1 port. You may want to disable
that message. Device Manager > USB Controllers (expand). Select the
controller/s > right click > Properties > Advanced tab > Don't show USB
errors (or similar) > tick.

Thanks. At this point, it's nothing more than an annoyance.
