USB Drive & Hub asking for drivers?

Hi,

Just brought a couple of cheap USB hubs, and some USB flash drives. On most
of our computers (windows xp Sp2) you can plug then in, it finds them, and
they work with out asking for drivers. However on 2 of our PCs (also xp
sp2), the new hardware wizard pops up, asking for drivers, as I don't have
any, it fails.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Cheers

Ben

Insufficient information!

Are the hubs you purchased USB 2 compatible? Are the afflicted computers
causing problems USB 2 compatible?

Adding USB 2 hubs to a computer that is only USB 1.1 capable is NOT going to
allow you to use USB 2 hubs if they are plugged into the standard USB 1.1
ports.

If you knew as much as you think you know,
You would realize that you don't know what you thought you knew!

I think the hubs are 1.1 & 2.0 compatible. The usb flash drives are 1.1
only, they are little silver hp 32 flash sticks. Work on other laptops in
the 1.1 port, but not on these 2 laptops. If you look in device manager it
has a yellow exclamation mark on the device, and says the drivers are not
loaded.

Are you, by chance, not installing these as an "administrator" type
account??? Limited type user accounts have been "known" to not allow the
USB flash drives to install into Windows.

I'm also having a problem with usb switch/hub.All cables and devices are
usb2. I'm using a Belkin 4port switch with a Belkin 4 port hub, three
computers connected. The 98 machine sees the printer etc, the 2000 also sees
the printer, the XP home machine doesn't? Been onto Belkin, they say no new
drivers, been onto the computer company, they say "as the computer prints
directly from the usb port it's not their problem".
Looks like XP doesn't recognise the switch?
Device manager says unknown device,no driver loaded. Tried loading an
earlier driver, XP came up with all usb devices are allready loaded/supported?

Anyone any clues?

Dave

Dave,

I fixed this by selecting the locate drivers manually (rather than letting
xp try to find them), and then pointing the location to "c:\windows\inf"
windows found the drivers, and installed it as a generic hub. I've also
tried removing the device and adding it again, but letting windows
automatically find the drivers, but it fails again. Seems by XP doesn't
actually look in the INF folder when installing new devices!?

Ben

Hi Ben,
I'm really getting (polite comment) fed up with this!
I borrowed an early 4 port hub (1.1) XP home recognised this with a warning
somthing like " this will be slower" ... So "home" sees the hub, but labelsmy
usb2 hub as "unknown"?
As you suggested tried goning the manual route, but can't find windows\inf?
Despite "searching"?
Got back to Belkin, they wanted me to update the "intel usb2 host
controller". Couldn't find that on the intel site either!
Wonder if XP Pro will work, just blow XP Home away?? or maybe reload 98SE
that gave no problems.

Dave

Dave,

Is there not a directory called "INF" under "c:\windows"? It is a
hidden/system folder, you may need to select 'display hidden & system files'
from the "folder options > view" menu. You don't even have to browse to it,
just type "c:\windows\inf" in the textbox during manual installation of the
driver. The INF directory is where windows stores all it's drivers, for some
reason my XP doesn't search this folder automatically, but if you point it
there it works!

Ben

Hi Ben,
found the "INF" file pointed the wizard to it, came back "the wizard could
not find a better match for your hardware......"
Try to explain my USB set up, all usb 2, cables and devices. Three computers
connected to a 4port switch, connected to a 4 port hub, 2 computers 2K, 98SE,
see my printer and scanner when I change the switch to the computer in use at
the time. The XP home does not see either the printer or scanner? (I take
from that, that it does not recognise the hub (unknown device))

Dave

You probably need to update the motherboards chipset's drivers.
Your motherboard may be USb 2.0 compatable, but windows may not recognize
it correctly without current USB drivers & chipset drivers.

Thanks, that worked

Ben,

Did you resolve this issue? I have a similar problem and found this KB
article that might offer an explination but I can't get hold of the hotfix.

Chris

<snip>

Why can't you get the hotfix? They are free and available for OEM and
retail products users. I think I responded to another of your posts on
how to get the hotfix.

Rock, thanks and you did reply to my other post. MS have been slow in getting
back to me as I was on the case over the weekend. Unfortunately I am now away
from the relevant machine so working on the issue is a little more awkward.

I wanted to know if this specific issue has been resolved with this hotfix
or if anything else managed to resolve the issue. - Hence the reason for
posting here.

Further information on my case -

1) The USB 2.0 hub works correctly on another machine.
2) The user account used that was attempted to set up the hub had
administrator privileges.
3) I have contacted the manufacturer of the Hub and the PCI card and all
drivers should be included within Windows - i.e. no separate drives needed.
4) I have connected the hub to both on board USB ports (although all on
board port are USB 1.1) and those on the USB card and see the same issue.
5) I have connected other devices to the USB 2.0 card with no other issues
(cameras, flash drive and printer).

:

Let's keep it in the other thread, Ok. I already responded there.

No worries. I was hopeing the the person who started this thread (Ben) would
reply here if he had found a resolution.

I have a similar problem and hope someone can send me the hotfix.
When I try to connect my USB2.0 external hard drive (Maxtor Personal Storage
3100), the computer does not recognize it. Microsoft knowledge Base article
# 892050 states that the problem is related to the Enhanced Host Controller
driver and requires customers to contact MS to obtain two files (usbehci.sys
dated 31-March 2005) and (Updspapi.dll dated Feb 25 2005). To make sure
that this KB article relates to my problem I disabled the Enhanced Host
Controller from Device Manager and sure enough, the computer connected the
external hard drive to a usb1.1 port but at much slower speed. Upon
contacting MS they advice me to contact the manufacturer (Dell) since my
Windows XP came pre-installed on my machine. I then tried to contact Dell,
but their response is that they only support hardawre problems. I have a Dell
Precision WorkStation 470 with XP SP2 installed.
I'd appreciate any help.

Which other thread is that please ? I have an issue, and I'm hoping that that
thread could be the answer for me. Thanks vm
