Usb devices not working in Vista Ultimate RTM

After installing Vista Ultimate RTM I found that none of my usb devices
(except my mouse was working). I have the following:

2 Seagate USB HD (USB 2.0)
1 Epson Stylus CX6600
1 WD USB HD (USB 2.0)
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard

These devices are working fine when I run Windows XP. I have tried changing
out usb cables, tried different usb ports but no luck. The mouse is a USB
mouse and that one works but the rest aren't recognized by Vista.

Anyone have any ideas?

I seem to have the same problem - no external USB devices recognized on Vista
Ultimate RTM (upgrade from XP Pro SP2). This included external hard drives
that were always recognized in XP. Critical problem!

A bit more data. The USB hardware recognition is actually spotty. When I
plug in one 400 Gb HP external usb 2.0 hard drive, it doesn't recognize it in
any way. When I plug in a portable 40Gb drive, it shows up in Device Manager
under Disk Drives, but Vista doesn't assign it a drive letter. When I plug
in my Canon CanoScan lide500f scanner, it recognizes it as the correct
device, but doesn't find a driver. When I plug in my Epson R800 printer (I
know it doesn't have a Vista driver, it doesn't recognize it in any way.
Same with my Logitech Webcam. An interesting behavior is that, when a device
is recognized (sort of), it does the USB device insert sound immediately.
When a device is not going to be recognized in any way, it delays that sound
quite a bit.

I would think that Vista would recognize all USB hard drives and would
recognize the identity of all USB devices, even if it couldn't find drivers
for them.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Sometimes the problems with USB are cause by the hardware.
I could not format a hard drive in the 1st USB external
enclosures I had. I sent them back for a different brand
and they work fine.

I contacted Epson and the reply I got was until windows goes final they
would not be developing any drivers (I need some better print drivers for my
Epson Stylus photo R300 (especially the print monitor)).

You may want to check with your motherboard manufacturer. I have both a USB
and a Firewire hard drive, not to mention my PVR, Mouse, Printer, Remote
Receiver, Webcam, and a USB hub.
None of them are having any problems.

Hi!

I have exactly the same problem with Vista 32-bits.
But, it works fine with Windows XP and also with . .. Vista 64-bits.

Have a nice day!

What I am saying is check with your mobo manufacturer. I am sure everything worked well with XP, if it didn't, I would hope you wpouldn't be using it. But there may be a jiving issue between your mobo resources and Vista compatibility, your Mobo manufacturer may have the fix for it, a bios flash or something that may help with the issue.

Reinstalled vista and tried again. This time I just connected my HD (Seagate
USB HD). It recognized the drive and install a device driver for disk drive
however it is not showing up in the explorer. What is up here?

I had a similar problem with my Onetouch Drive - ie the OS saw the device but
wouldn't allocate a drive letter. I eventually found it was because I had a
password security option set on drive - so had to install maxtor secuirty
prog on a system with XP, attached the maxtor drive and turned off security.
Vista then saw the drive normally - I haven't had the nerve to switch the
password option back on!
