USB device woes

I have purchased two difference USB camera memory card
readers. They are made by SanDisk, and seem fairly common.

The come with CDs with drivers/software, but the
instructions say with XP the driver/software install is
not necessary.

When I plug in the device, my XP computer doesn't
recognize the removeable media in the reader.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

The BIOS must be set to use USB in some computers. Check the USB devices in
the device manager. If that is OK, try to format the removable media card.

Unplug both devices.
Open Control Panel
Click System
Click Hardware
Click Device Manager
Click VIEW, place a tic in "Show Hidden Devices"
Click + beside "Universal Serial Bus Controllers"
Look through list for "USB Mass Storage Device"
If found and "Grayed" out - Right Click & choose
Uninstall.
Repeat if any additional Mass Storage listings appear
Close all Applet boxes - Reboot
Do not install the software/drivers for the Readers
Plug the first device in and wait for PNP enumeration
to complete
Recheck Device Manager, USB category and ensure
that the Mass Storage Device appears and is not
grayed out.
Then insert the second reader into a USB socket.

Does it give you the problem on both reader installations
or just on the second one? One reader may be conflicting
the other's files. If you plug the reader in the USB
slot AFTER booting, WinXP's plug&play feature should
state that new hardware is found and ask you if you want
to install it. Install one reader first and check if it
is working properly then reinstall the second one for
proper application process.
P.S. Uninstall them both first.
