USB Card Reader

R

Ron

I have used a Sandisk CF card reader on Win XP Home for a couple of years.
Suddenly, it isn't recognized as a working device in Device Manager. I
bought a new card reader with the same problem. It says "No Driver
Installed" and it is listed as a Unknown Device. I deleted the driver
(Microsoft default) and reinstalled it, rebooted and still get the same
msg's. I have also switched USB ports with no luck. Any idea why it quit
working?

R

Ron

The knowledge base basically states what I already know - still not sure how
to troubleshoot it?

"Most USB devices are designed to function properly without additional
device drivers, because they are configured by the drivers included with
Windows XP."

That is really too much info to get my brain around. I tried some of the
simple suggestions with no luck. It mentions there would be a yellow X in
Device Manager indicating there is a problem. Device Mgr is clean, no
yellow. I took the CF Reader from my computer and tried it. Same thing, it
wont recognize anything new connected to the USB port. The mouse and printer
are connected and work fine, switched USB cords around with no luck.

The only problem device is a Realtech Ethernet Adapter that says "disabled".

It's a case of determining if its a hardware or a software issue, I
suggest you start here as per the article and see if anything turns up:
1.. Click Start, and then click Run.
2.. In the Open box, type msinfo32, and then click OK.
3.. In the left pane, expand Components, and then double-click Problem
Devices. [etc]

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately, I have unplugged everything except mouse
with no luck. Yes, it is an unpowered hub but it worked up until last week.
It's an older computer with only one USB port.

Another thought, are you using an unpowered hub to connect your
peripherals ?, I have seen your sort of issue wereby there wasn't
sufiicient power available for several devices using unpowered hubs.
printers, ADSL Modems and scanners etc can overwhelm them bear that in
mind.
If this is the case here [you don't say], and you haven't tried it
already, unplug all peripherals except mouse and try the card reader
again, also have you tried the reader in another PC to verify that
it does actually work.

Maybe it's fried now ?, basically if you draw too much power through
a wire it gets hot ...... heat shortens the life of electronic devices
Consider purchasing an inexpensive USB2 PCI add in card that has 4
ports, you are running XP so there shouldn't be any compatibility
issues with the PCI Bus.

But I can run the mouse or the printer from the hub with no problem, it's
just the card reader that reports Unknown Device. Removing and reinstalling
drivers doesn't work and removing from Device Mgr and re-installing is to no
avail. I'm stumped. It works on my other computer but not my girlfriends.
