Cannot install card reader(s)

Mark G.

On my new XP Pro install.... I cannot get my card reader(s) via USB to
install; through any USB connection on my computer. one is just a plain jane
single compact flash reader that is "SCM Micro USBAT-02". the other is a
Sandisk 12-1 multi-card reader. have had problems with the second one before
that i never was able to resolve on my last xp install. not sure what to do
here. Even tried finding drivers for the first and found something for Win
95/98, but that didn't do the trick. Can anyone help please? Thanks much.

Go the the manufacturer's website and get drivers specifically made for XP

do NOT use win98 drivers!

I could not find any whatsoever. To top that off, these types of things are
supposed to be easily loaded with XP considering all the 'built-in' drivers
and such. If you search for "SCM Micro USBAT-02"... you will see what I
mean. Guess I could have missed something, but was pretty diligent in my
search. Any further assistance is much appreciated!

Try a Google search for USBAT-02.

I have tried that and tried it again. nothing for XP exists that I could
find. Closest thing I found was this file "UPATC.SYS", and that was for W2k
and that wouldn't work either. As I mentioned before, this worked prior to
this install and I am not having any other issues with my OS. It shows in
device manager but I cannot update it whatsoever. Other ideas please?

I have an old sandisk that doesn't work under Vista. Don't remember if
it worked with xp or not.
It's in the box labeled: "problem devices".
It's unlikely that you'll find an xp driver for any such device.
Newer devices work automagically. And there are licensing terms that
PROHIBIT vendors from releasing USB drivers in many cases.
There's no profit in the vendor
fixing an obsolete device...they want to sell you a new one.

If you're a masochist, ask the question in a USB newsgroup.
You may be able to find a utility to read out the vendor and device ID.
Then you may be able to edit a .inf file to recognize the device and
install a driver that works...

My suggestion is...
Go down to the blood bank or sperm bank and make a contribution.
Use the money to buy a new reader. It'll take a LOT less time
and effort.
And you'll leave with orange juice...or a smile...depending on
your choice...

Using the suggestion to search on "SCM Micro USBAT-02", I ended
up on this page.

http://www.delkin.com/drivers/

The PocketCF.exe file, mentions USBAT-02 in the INF. And
has a UPATC.SYS file in it. This is from the Readme file.

*******
- The Setup.exe program does not support WindowsXP operating systems
and will not run in this environment.

- Driver installation can only be achieved via the Windows
"Add New Hardware Wizard" utility.

- To launch the Add New Hardware Wizard simply plug-in the USB cable
of the Reader to any available USB port on the computer.

- When prompted provide the location of the "WinXP" driver folder
and follow the instructions in any subsequent dialog screens.

- After successful driver installation the USB Reader device should
become available as a drive icon via My Computer.
*******

Perhaps that will allow your CF card reader to work.

I opened the PocketCF file with 7zip, without any installer
running. That is how I could read the README file, without
screwing up my computer by attempting an install.
