USB controller malfunction?

JudyH

I have a Dell Dimension 8300 running Windows XP. I cannot install any new
USB devices. The software and hardware appear to load OK but then the
Install New Hardware Wizard says it can't find the software. Have tried
installing USB 2.0 PCI card in case that was the problem, but can't install
this either - same error. Any clues/solutions?

Yes, of course I installed the driver with the PCI card. And with a mouse.
And with a webcam. But my computer still 'can't find the software'.

the pci cards usually don't have drivers...

they are plug and play and use drivers that xp and vista already have,

they give a CD but that is for windows 98- Me

Judy...

can you describe the exact hardware you are trying to install in the USB ?

This is probably not a problem with your USB ports..

So lets locate the real problem...

J

JudyH

Yeah, I know, but 'it' asked for the CD. Plus, this isn't just happening
with the PCI card. It also happened with a MicroSoft webcam (but a Logitech
managed to limp onboard somehow) AND a plain old optical USB mouse.

Can you tell me what "it" is?

listen...

here is how most webcams work>>>

You install the software-driver first

and THEN you plug in the device,

then windows says.. aha here is the driver for the think you plugged in and

presto! its installed

Some devices even have a STICKER right on the USB cable that say WARNING>>>
INSTALL SOFTWARE DRIVER FIRST!!!

try it this way...

I am here to help you..

Does it give a "browse" option ?

J

Can get to browse, yes, from dialogue box, or via Device Manager to things
like 'update drivers' etc. but it still 'can't find the software'. Pointing
to Windows\System32, for instance, still yields same response.

Is this likely to be a device conflict? Hardware fault? Something screwed
up in the Registry thru trying to install MicroSoft webcam?????

Hi Judy,

If you go to Device Manager does it show all your usb controllers as
normal or is there a yellow exclamation point there or a red x on one of
them.

I have a POS desktop I built by hand with Windows XP SP3. As soon as
I plug any new device into one of the USB ports, XP recognizes almost
instantly that something new has happened and I can take it from
there. Usually not having to do much of anything except follow the
directions.

Does XP even notice you plugged the new device in?

What is your new USB device? Is it really new or is it just new to
you? Do you believe it is undamaged? Have you contacted the
manufacturer or checked their WWW page?

Have you tried plugging your device into another Windows computer that
doesn't already know about it yet to see what happens?

Do any of your USB devices work?

Did your working USB devices stop working after you installed XP?

The 3000 has been for several years. Have these USB ports ever
worked?

If you are up and running and unplug or plug in a USB device that you
know works, does Windows notice that or is it just your new device
having the problem?

Where is that link on how to post a message...

This is as bad as the "Existing User Not Found!" message I got earlier
today from somewhere else.
