USB Adapter

(This may be a little difficult to follow.)
I have an Asus A7V333 motherboard. My motherboard has a connection for USB
1.1 and a connection for USB 2.0. Asus supplied me a plate that comes with
two more USB ports that were USB 2.0, so I'm forced to use the USB 1.1
connection for my front USB ports. Here's my problem, when I swap the two
so that plate is run as USB 1.1 and my front USB ports are run as USB 2.0,
my computer restarts itself anytime that I plug a device into the front USB
ports and only one of the USB ports on the plate on the back works. When I
go back to having the USB 1.1 in the front and the USB 2.0 on the plate in
the back, it's fine. Here's my question. Is there an internal adapter out
there that will let me hook up my front USB ports as USB 2.0 since my front
USB ports do support USB 2.0? Thanks. It gets a little old everytime I
plug in my picture card reader or Cruzer Mini in the front and get a message
telling me that the device can perform faster, and I would like it to
perform faster. I could plug it in in the back, but that would defeat the
purpose of the front (actually top on my case) USB ports. Besides, I only
have 1 USB port free in the back. (I'm using 5 of 6 in the back. None of
which are USB 2.0 devices.)

There are devices like this. This is a hub that sits in a drive
bay. There are cables in the box, so you can run a connection from
a jack on the back of the computer, through a PCI slot plate with
a hole for the cable, then to the back of the hub. The hub also uses
a floppy power connector, for DC power. When I look at some of these,
I cannot actually tell how many end-user ports they have (some of
the connectors are inputs and some outputs, and the ad copy might
be wrong).

This one, on the other hand, doesn't burn up any ports from the
back of the computer, because it has its own PCI card with chips
on it. A ribbon cable runs from the PCI card, up to an included
drive bay I/O panel. The ribbon cable carries USB and Firewire
connections from the PCI card to the I/O panel.

If you want to whip something together from bits and pieces,
this page at FrontX will help with odd-ball cables:

Anything involving front panel always seems to involve some
amount of hardware hacking. Like maybe the included cables
aren't long enough. Or, if you are using the FrontX cables,
maybe you need to move some connections around on the 2x5
end of the cable. At least some of the solutions now are
getting closer to "consumer friendly".

I've seen these boxes before, but I've never known how to hook them up and
if my computer was ready for them, but the information that you gave me
helped. I don't have an iPod, although I do have a Rio S35S. I can still
use the front (top) USB ports that came built-in with my case, correct? If
so, I could always use those USB ports for my mp3 player as it's only USB
1.1 anyway. Thanks. And by the way, I will be needing a black one for my
black Aspire X-Infinity case that I ordered off of newegg. I have three PCI
slots that are not in use, but one of them is not accessible as the video
card is in the way. The other two, I will have to do some moving around to
get it to fit. Either I'll have to move the plate that has the switch for
my case lights or I'll have to move the plate with the back USB ports or I
might have to move both.

Are you sure the pinouts are the same for both the 1.1 and 2.0 connections?
Did you check the manual? Sounds like maybe the connections to the front
ports and the back plate are wired differently.

For the USB 1.1 Header:
Pin# Name
1 USB Power
2 USBP2-
3 USBP2+
4 GND
5 NC
6 USB Power
7 USBP3-
8 USBP3+
9 GND
10 (no pin)

USB 2.0 Header
Pin # Name
1 USB+5V
2 LDM1
3 LDP1
4 GND
5 NC
6 USB+5V
7 LDM2
8 LDP2
9 GND
10 (no pin)

The USB 2.0 on the front would work, but usually it would restart and when
it did restart, it would work fine until I would unplug the device and plug
it in later. It didn't always, however restart. But, usually it did.
