USB 2 Problems

Recently I was having some problems with Windows XP and my son reinstalled it
for me. He did not install Service Pack 1 as he did not realize my version
did not include it but he did install all the critical updates from the
Windows update site and Service Pack 2. After the reinstallation I
discovered that my USB 2 ports (Asus A8V Deluxe motherboard) were not
operating at USB 2 speed. The message I got was "There are no HI-SPEED USB
host controllers installed on this computer" I checked the bios and the USB 2
controller is enabled.

I was considering downloading and installing Windows Service Pack 1 as it is
supposed to contain the drivers but I am concerned that I could 'screw up' if
I install it after it already has Service Pack 2 installed. I would
appreciate any suggestions on how to get the USB 2 ports working at the
proper speed.

Go to Start/Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC , highlight the USB HUB device(s),
Action menu, "Uninstall", then restart Windows, to find the device drivers
again automatically.

SP2 contains everything from SP1, so you don't need to install it. You
actually couldn't install it, since SP2 is the latest version.

Do *not* install SP1. You already have it. SP2 includes all the fixes
in SP1.

Gary:
The first thing to do is to check your motherboard's BIOS to determine that
the USB settings are correct. Ensure that the USB 2.0 controller has been
enabled. That is the default but it's always possible something or someone
has changed it.

Some ASUS boards also have a BIOS item referring to a USB 2.0 mode. If yours
does, check that it's set to the Hi Speed option for full USB 2.0
capability.

Then there's the possibility that ASUS has provided (on its motherboard's
installation CD) a USB 2.0 driver that needs to be installed. In theory the
XP OS containing SP2 contains the necessary controller drivers for USB 2.0
capability, but with certain ASUS motherboards (and again, I'm not sure the
A8V Deluxe was one of them) it *was* necessary to install the ASUS USB
driver to obtain this capability. So check your User Guide and the
motherboard's installation CD to see if there's any reference to the
preceding.

Mark;

There is 1 USB Composite Device, 4 USB Root Hubs and 4 VIA Rev 5 or later
USB Universal Host Controllers. Do I uninstall ALL of them or just the 4 USB
Root Hubs?

Anna;

The USB 2 Controller is set to Enable and to the Controller Mode is set to
Full Speed. There is also a Legacy USB Support that is set to Auto.

The motherboard installation disk refers you to Windows XP Service Pack 1
for the USB drivers.

Hi Gary,
Per your description "Windows XP and my son reinstalled it " did he
installed the MOBO drivers?.
If not you need to install the chipset drivers from the Mobo CD then delete
the EHCI from device manager and reboot and it will be installed for you.
Please take your time and read the links below then see which apply to you.
Your USB2.0 should be Enhanced USB Host Controller (EHCI ) in Device Manager
if it installed or the right driver installed for it.

Gary:
Did you notice that in my previous response I suggested that if there's a
BIOS item referring to USB 2.0 mode it should be set to "Hi Speed"? Assuming
that BIOS setting has that option in addition to the "Full Speed" setting
you mention, did you try changing the setting to Hi Speed as I suggested?

And I take it from your last comment that the motherboard's reference to SP1
re the USB 2.0 drivers is indicating, in effect, that USB 2.0 capability
will be achieved as long as the XP OS contains (at least) SP2. Is that your
understanding?

Correction...
Should read "as long as the XP OS contains (at least) SP1."

Nass;

Thanks. I found the quick fix in the USB FAQ link you sent. I just had to
go into the USB Controller under Other Devices and click on reinstall drivers
and my ports are now operating properly.
