USB 2.0 problems digging me in deeper

Have ASUS P4B533-E mother board with 6 USB ports 2.0/1.1. However, I always got "Hi speed device connected to low speed bus" message when using them. The latest drivers supposedly were installed (MS update scan showed nothing of interest). On the ASUS knowledge base I saw a pointer and reference to intel USB drivers so I tried them. Now the USB ports do not work at all and device manager won't even give me an option to update the drivers

I thought maybe I can re-install SP1a, but I need a manual update procedure for that. The ASUS driver instructions require that device manager behave properly, so that it a problem

How do I "undo" the apparently wrong intel driver install? And why does the USB driver in SP1 not support 2.0

Thank you for your time & effort in responding.

Update: I'm now back using the latest (as far as I know) XP drivers which should support 2.0, but don't seem to. So I can access my USB device, but only at the slow speed

I see that others have had this problem and the only comments are that SP1 should work. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Brad,

I'm not affiliated with Microsoft but maybe I can help you.

First, it sounds like your drivers are installed correctly,
since you see an EHCI entry in device manager.

Each USB host controller has one root hub and multiple ports.

From your description, your motherboard has 4 host controllers:
1 is EHCI (high speed) and 3 are UHCI(full/low speed).

Each host controller has a root hub and the EHCI has a
"USB 2.0 Root Hub" while the UHCI controllers each have
just a "Root Hub".

The EHCI controller has 6 ports while each of the UHCI
controllers has 2 ports.

To the outside world the EHCI and 3 UHCI controllers are
a single package with 6 ports. If you plug in a high speed
device into any of these ports the EHCI controller will handle
the device. If you plug in a low or full speed device a UHCI
controller will handle the device. Because of this automatic
switching behavior, you can use each of the 6 ports for any
speed device.

Hope that helps,

Well I seem to be talking just to myself, but then computer support has
always been an illusion anyway!
I now have one port that works in hi speed mode. The others just function
at 1.1 speed. The motherboard manual clearly states that all 6 are 2.0.
The chip set is the Intel 82801 DB ICH4.
In device manager, you see "Intel(r) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host
Controller - 24CD" for the first entry.
Then 3 lines of "Intel(r) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller -
24C2" (at ends: 24C2, 24C4, 24C7)
Then next line "USB 2.0 Root Hub".
Then 3 lines of "USB Root Hub".

I have spent hours reading other USB problem entries. None seem to
provide anything conclusive. Do I have the right drivers installed? ASUS
says that the XP drivers should be used. And one port does work. So what
the heck is going on???

good info from Stan...

BTW this is NOT a "support" site ...it is a discussion group of users (some
more knowledgeable than others :> )

hope Stan's info was a help

Stan, thanks for the info. It makes sense, but it does not explain why the ports behave differently (i.e. that IS the problem)

So the same high speed device works at high speed in only 1 of the 6 ports. (Assumption here b/c currently only have access to 4 ports physically - other 2 are internal and not available today.)

From your description, I thought you might be expecting to see
something different in device manager, so I just wanted to make
sure that wasn't the problem. But now I understand more clearly
what you are experiencing and I don't have an answer for that.

For my work, I have an Intel motherboard with the 82801EB chipset.
It is similar to your 82801DB except it has a total of 8 ports with one
EHCI controller and 4 UHCI controllers. Like yourself, I've only wired
some of the ports, but when I plug in a high speed device on any of
these ports (6 of them), it is recognized as high speed. I installed
XP SP1a.

I mention that just to reassure you that it "should work" but our
motherboards are different. I'm not familiar with ASUS motherboards.
Does ASUS require that you use their drivers or can you use the ones
that ship with XP? Also have you checked the BIOS Setup?
There may be some options that control USB 2.0 support
(but usually it is all or nothing).
