Hi David,
I had same problem. But I did not realize what was wrong.
1.I did this:
Run safe mode
Switch off RestoreOS(SystemRecovery)
Uninstall suspicious and unnecessary applications from ARP.
Run ad-aware(e.g. lavasoft)to clean registry
Run antivirus e.g. Scandisk
Restart
Always have switch on Firewall in the Windows (in the
network properties) before you connect to net!
Install Firewall e.g. Kerio
Startup monitoring antivirus.
2. You can do this as well
Restore from past point system from the System recovery in
the XP Start/programs/accessories/system
tools/SystemRecovery(Im not sure the last item but like
this)
3. Or you can reinstall XP.
Hope it helps.
Bye NINA

First check your system for spyware/malware and viruses.

Run these programs to check for spyware/malware. After installing
update them, then boot into safe mode and run them. You should run
update and run them weekly.

Make sure you have a firewall active at all times. If nothing else use
the one built into XP, but there are a variety of free third party ones
that do a better job from Sygate, Zone Alarm or Kerio.

Sygate Personal Firewall

Zone Alarm

Kerio Personal Firewall
