URGENT In XP Pro SP2, browsers on strike :(

Hi. I have a computer with Windows XP Pro with SP2, as well as Windows 98 SE
installed. For Internet browsers, I also have Netscape 8 and Firefox
installed besides Internet Explorer 6.

After installing SP2, the browsers - I mean all of them - started to be on
strike. They kept telling me that 'the web site cannot be find' ('Cannot find
server' error page in IE). Even for http://localhost (I have IIS installed).
I cannot check e-mail using Outlook Express either.

However, all instant messaging program like MSN Messenger and ICQ were
functioning properly (messages can be sent successfully). Also, when I
switched to Safe Mode with Networking or Windows 98 SE, all browsers are
functioning properly. I tried to PING some web sites in command prompt and
the result was normal.

I go to the Windows Firewall and saw a message (white font, blue background)
that reads 'For your security, some settings are controlled by Group Policy'.
Below the 'Off (not recommended)' radio box is checked.

I asked a friend who also have XP Pro with SP2 of mine and he said that he
didn't set exceptions for browsers.

I have the Administrator's privilige. How can I get the browsers back to
duty? Should I send them paychecks? Huge thanks in advance.

I am also having the same problem! I've tried everything, including disabling
my firewall, but nothing works. The Microspft site has no mention of such a
problem. Also, if you look down in this newsgroup you will see there are a
few other people with the same issue, with no response.

Please do post a solution here if you get one. I'll do the same.

Thanks,

iq
