Started my pc today to find the following error.

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I have searched microsoft knowledge base and support but cannot find help.
Does anybody know how I can replace this file or fix it.

I am running Windows xp sp1a

Hi Efraim,

NTOSKRNL Missing or Corrupt

Go to the recovery console and choose R (repair) then type

cd X: (Where X is the letter of the CD-ROM drive)

cd i386
expand ntkrnlmp.ex_ Y:\Windows\System32\ntoskrnl.exe

(where Y is the letter of the drive where windows is installed)

See "Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console"

Good luck
