Missing file windows will not boot

Terry

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I just finished doing a complete install of winxp, I got this prompt when
the computer rebooted to install windows updates. I looked on the winxp
recovery disc and can't find this file. It want let me boot up into safe
mode either.

Help!

And thanks in advance..

Hi terry,

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file.
[...]

Using the XP CD, boot to the recovery console and type
cd X:
cd i386
expand ntkrnlmp.ex_ Y:\Windows\System32\ntoskrnl.exe

(Where X is the letter of your CD ROM and Y the partition where you
installed Windows)

This usually means that the boot.ini is missing or corrupt. You can recreate
it from the recovery console. I think with "fixboot"
Unless you have a backup of boot.ini, in which case use that.
