Missing or corrupt file

When I attempt to boot up I receive the message:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or
corrupt:
windows root\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.
Please Re-install a copy of the file."

I have the original Windows XP discs which came with the computer but
it appears that the Quickrestore will delete all of the data. How do I
simply restore the offending file?

I used the restore disk I got with the computer and thankfully it asked
whether I wanted to do an emergency boot up or restore. It was either "1" or
"2".....I tried to use the keyboard but it is inoperable and the mouse is not
responding. Eventually it went to an A:\> prompt but I still can't get to my
USB device or any other drive to copy a new copy of the file from another
computer? All of the postings I have seen require the use of a XP CD.....ANY
SUGGESTIONS?
