Urgent: cannot receive mail

I have done a new install of Windows Vista Basic. I entered all the right
account information in windows mail. All settings are checked, re checked and
checked again. They are right! With my firewall and anti virus program off it
still doesn't receive mail. Sending is working OK. Because I use mail for
work , can anyone help me out?
 
Any error message? If so, please quote it verbatim.
