Cannot Receive Mail

I have a POP3 Mail account. I can send email, but cannot receive. I have
checked all the settings against another computer in my home That is working
normally and they are the same. This is happening on a windows vista mail
program. I have a laptop that I use and I have no problems receiving email
on it. My Internet provider say's that it is a Windows Vista problem. Any
suggestions?

We can only help you if you post the error message since it contains
important diagnostic information. Each problem is a little different

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'Tony's Mail', Server: 'pop-server.tampabay.rr.com',
Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error
Number: 0x800CCC0F

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of Trend's
anti-virus seems to be causing problems too.

Over time, some antivirus programs tend to corrupt Windows Mail.
Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee and Norton
security programs. Those will need to be uninstalled, NOT
just disabled.

If after uninstalling your antivirus the Windows Mail problem does
not improve, delete the corrupted mail account, restart Windows Mail,
then recreate that account.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like:
AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

With either of those, during the install phase you must select custom
install, and then deselect the email scanning option.

I have a pop3 account and am having exactly the same problem since
yesterday. My internet provider says that it is a Windows Vista Problem. I
have also tried everyting and have posted a query earlier.

If you're using pop3 or POP3 as the server name, that's the problem.
They're
not valid server names. Ask your internet provider for their instructions
for
setting up to use their email servers, which should include the correct
server
names.

I did not get an error message. I've been able to use it only one day. The
next day I was not receiving any emails. I sent a test from a different
email acct and it did not go thru.

Frank,
That was it!!! I have email in my program for the first time since
November. Thank You.

The cause was my AVG Grisoft anti virus program, (which I like this
program). I only disable the email scanning portion and it worked.

Thanks again.

Does "it did not go thru" mean that you received a 'bounce' or non-
delivery message from the sending account?
When you start the receive process, does it appear to go through
the motions of contacting the server? Does it report "No new messages"
in the lower right corner?
Did you access the server via web mail and ascertain that there were
messages waiting to be downloaded?
Also, tell us which antivirus program you are using.

Hi agold,Iam on Windows Vista Premium and I am on Windows Mail, now, the
problem with not receiving my messages started the last weekend in May.I do
have an error message,it's- (The connection to the server has failed.
Account: 'POPHM.sympatico.ca', Server: 'POPHM.sympatico.ca', Protocol: POP3,
Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E)
Now,I have contacted Bell and they told me to change the account properties
around but that didn't work either.Just today I contacted Microsoft and they
told me that there was a big chance of Windows Mail being down or technical
difficulties.I have read all of you posts and most of them are the same, but
the one of them had the same error message as I did. Now,agold,I have gone
into Windows Mail, clicked on about Windows Mail, then it came up as the
version and other info.I asked Microsoft if the Mail program is out of
date, they said it could very well be that the Mail program is just old or
gone out of date somehow,I don't know. Please reply back agold if I could be
assistance for you,OK?

Windows Mail doesn't start out corrupted, but if you insist on
running a non-compatible antivirus with it, you stand a
good chance of corrupting Windows Mail accounts.

from happening.

No dig intended. I was just making a statement of fact about the
tendency of Windows Mail to get corrupted from a non-compatible
antivirus. That fact has been posted in this newsgroup thousands
of times over the past 15 months.

What is the non-compatible any virus programme I am using?

You would first have to tell me which antivirus you are running.
The three brands that have been most troublesome are Norton,
McAfee and Trend Micro.

"Me too" posts aren't very helpful.
In order for the experts here to help you, you need to describe
the exact symptoms, and include a copy of the error message.
