I installed SP2 a few weeks ago and I am having trouble with my router. I
can't connect to my Speedtouch 510V4 config pages on the local ip address
10.0.0.138 i could do this before Sp2 without a hitch.

When I use my web browser after a few seconds the msn search screen will
appear with possible sreach results for 10.0.0.138 and when i use telnet it
times out.

The router appears/disappears from the Network Connections screen
intermittently. I can access the config pages once in a while but even when i
access I get locked out after a few seconds.

I have allowed the Upnp framework as a FIrewall exception, I have disabled
the XP firewall but all to no avail, can anyone help solve this issue.

UPnP is not necessary, AFIK, to access any router's GUI. You can try
disabling and turning off the UPnP service and the SSDP Discovery
service, see if you can then access the router GUI, then turn off UPnP
in the router (or not, your choice).

Alternatively, if the router appears in Network Connections, simply
double-clicking it should bring up the GUI.

Another thought: add the router URL to Trusted Sites.

Robert,

please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm and
look particularly at the repair procedures for the Winsock and
possibly for the entire IP stack. Adware is a frequent cause of
such problems.

Thanks for your help folks.

Unfortunately none of the suggestions has cured the problem. I am going to
reset the router back to factory default and see what happens. Incidentally
when I manage to access the router config pages, Upnp is set in Secure mode,
could this be the potential problem. I will then resort to disabling upnp and
attempt to open the required ports for messenger and bittorrent and see what
happens.

Robert,

can Bittorrent do UPnP? I guess not, so you'd have to open those
ports manually anyway.

I suspect the router a bit. Can't you reach the router's config
page from any other computer either? It seems a bit unlikely
that all computers would suddenly fail to display a simple web
page, unless the router failed to provide it. With Bittorrent
you need a good router anyway, and I haven't even heard of
Speedtouch. How much did the router cost? Why does it have this
peculiar address of 10.0.0.138?

Before i installed Sp2 all was well, I could access the default gateway
address 10.0.0.138 to access the router config pages which are in essence
local web pages. This address is the router's assigned config pages IP
address set up by the manufacturer and is a recognised LAN local ip address,
my two PC's are on 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2, I now the other local address
starts at 169....

I have two computers connected to this router, both running Sp2 and I can
only connect to the router config pages as soon as windows has started, after
that it is very much pray and hope if I want to amend anything.
The Bit Torrent clients I use, Azureus and Bit Tornado both support UPNP.

The Speedtouch 510V4 is made by a company called Thomson and from what I
believe is a very popular router in the UK. The router has been very
dependable up until now, it cost me just under £100 when I bought it almost 2
years ago.

Robert,

the latest version of Azureus appears to do UPnP just fine.
Don't know about Bit Tornado.

I have no further ideas. If your computers are free of adware
then I wouldn't know what else to try.
