Uploading an older version of OS Win XP

I am having troubles with my laptop. About a week ago I started
getting an error message when I would startup my computer. The error
message was "Internal Error" with a blue screen and it would shut my
computer down.

I've been told I need a new hard drive, but before I rep[laced my
hardd rive I wanted to try to format my current hard drive and
reinstall my older version of XP pro. However, when I put the cd in,
I'm told that it cannot load the os because it's older system than my
current system. I've tried to change the boot up sequence to have it
run from the cd but to no avail. Can anyone tell me how I delete my
current operating system so I can laod my older one from the cd?
Thank you in advance.

BACKUP YOUR DATA FIRST!

If you cannot change the boot sequence to boot from the CD first and then
DELETE everything on the partition before installing on it (the installation
walks you to a point where it asks which partition to install on - you
DELETE the partition(s) it shows, create new partition(s) and install on
that) - then you will have to Slipstream SOP2 into the CD - although - if
you cannot boot from the CD - you won't really be doing anything but getting
arounds that message - there will be no clean installation.

When you set the machine to boot from the CD drive first and you have the
true Windows XP installation CD in there - you have to watch carefully for
the 'Press any key to boot from CD' message and then... Press a key before
it disappears.

Then - when you start following it through the installation instructions -
when it asks you which partition you wish to install on - tell it (instead)
to DELETE the partition(s) and then you should create and format new
partition(s) to install onto.

That all assumes you want a CLEAN install (everything gone except Windows
XP) and that you have a true Windows XP installation CD.

Thanks for the tips. Is there a difference between a windows xp
upgrade and win xp os? I used this disk before, it's not letting me
override my current os.

If your hd is failing its pointless trying to reinstall winxp on it, or even
trying to do anything else with it.
If you dont have data backups, now is the time to do it, if you are able to
access the drive.

You cannot repair reinstall because your winxp cd is an earlier version (sp
version) than that allready installed, you can only clean install, which
means you will lose all data/apps on the sysytem
