To correct applications not properly closing problem, I cannot install older
version XP (version 2002 service pack2) while I am currently
using XP (5.1 build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.080814-1236 service pack 3),
downloaded from the MS site. May be i am attacking this problem incorrectly.

Applications not closing properly has nothing to do with installing SP2 over
SP3,actually windows wont allow it.Plus,SP2 updates are included with SP3
(most)..Try opening event viewer & get specifics as to "what the OS is
doing",or having problems with..Clicking on the url in a warning/event,opens
xp kb help & support, usually with a fix.

Thanks Andrew E.

Where is 'event viewer' how do I access it. There is no URL identified when
an application does not close. Just a blank application screen. I have to
click 'End Task" window opens number of times to get out of the application.
My thinking was that by re installing the Operating System I can get rid of
this problem. I am not competent enough to go deeper into the windows
programing.

Control Panel>Adminastrative Tools>Event Viewer

If your using Task Manager (Ctr+Alt+Del) to end the program, it should tell
you what program is not responding.
It sounds like a background program, Have you scanned your PC for Virus &
Malaware lately?
