Windows XP not Booting in SAFE Mode

S

My wife's SONY VAIO desktop running XP Professional with SP3 only boots to
the point that I get SAFE Mode in all four corners and a statement across the
top saying Microsoft Windows XP (Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.080814-1236:Service
Pack 3). I have completely shut down all power and unplugged all connections
and replugged everything. That got me to being able to get a safe mode boot
to the point stated above. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did this happen after becoming infected with a virus or spyware?? OR after
cleaning out the infections??

More information would be helpful because I'm sure the computer didn't just
start doing this.
