I want Search Companion as default when searching

R

Ricky

I am running Windows XP Home Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.080814-1236
: Service Pack3)
Before I installed SP3 - whenever I clicked Start -> Search - I would always
get the Search Companion window to do my search.
Since installing SP3 & later on Windows Search Indexing - I keep getting the
Windows Search window up. I then have to use the left hand pane to click on
Search Companion.
No great problem - but is there a way of getting the Search Companion window
to come up as default screen like it used to?
I can't seem to find any settings that I can alter to make this happen.

Hi Ricky. Yes it can be done. Problem is I don't remember how to do it. I
had it changed on my XP Home SP3 but after reloading Windows it was back to
the default. Someone in one of the maillists explained how to do it but I
haven't been able to find it again. Hopefully the person will read this and
respond. I also haven't had any luck in web searching.

Hi pip22 - thanks for your reply - but did not help.
Windows Search is how MS describe it (not me)
(its on my Start-->Program Files --> Windows Search)
I know its pretty much the same thing - its just that I have more control
over the search parameters with Search Companion.

I already tried "Change Preferences" but that only seemed to work for
Internet searches. I had to click on "Use Search Companion" each time, if I
wanted to search my pc - which was just getting to be a bit of a pain.
Now it comes up as "Search Companion" screen each time - saves me extra
scrolling and clicking - just being lazy I guess !!
Thanks for your help anyway.

Hi Louie,
Don't understand what you mean. I reply to individual posts and beneath my
reply is quoted the post that I am replying to.
What other "Quote Function" should I be using?

Unfortunately if you use the sig delimiter and DON'T bottom post, anyone
who replies to you with a properly configured news reader will end up
losing what you quoted. So either change/remove the Signature, or Bottom
post instead.

Hi Bob I,
Sorry - don't understand sig delimiter.
I don't have or use a newsreader, so have no idea how it's supposed to work.
As far as reading the posts on this site - I always keep the post that I'm
replying to beneath my reply - so someone else can follow the thread of the
conversation.

The Sig delimiter is the "--" after your posting. Perhaps you have set
a signature line? If so please remove it or place your posting below the
quoted material.

Yes - I did set a signature in my profile, when I first registered, many
moons ago.
If that causes a problem for "news readers", then I'm puzzled why MS have
this facility in the profile page.
Seem pretty reasonable to me to write a post or reply and have a
signature/name at the end of it - then followed by the post that I'm replying
to.
If that causes a problem for "newsr eaders" - then maybe it's the "news
reader" that should be junked ! ;-)
